Last week was a special week for generative art in Berlin, as generative art fans and practitioners flocked to the city, old and young alike, for the Generative Art Summit: From Camera to Artificial Intelligence 1952-2024, hosted by the Foundation Herbert W. Franke. Naturally, the doors of the gallery were open during this special event and we made sure to host our second Takeover.
The day before the heady program of the conference started, Anna Lucia and Kyra Orbons held the second session of their ongoing generative tattoos project, {yes, yes, no, yes} in the back of the gallery. During the BM Venice finale celebrations, they held their first session, last week they marked 10 more people with generative tattoos. Meanwhile, the front of the gallery became a space for generative artists to come together, take respite from a long day in the city, and chat art. It was great meeting a lot of familiar and new faces in Berlin!
BERLIN BERLIN
On Wednesday evening, July 6, artists River Davis and YuYu, along with curator Alex Aravantinos, presented two thought-provoking AI collections reflecting on the city's decades-long activity regarding political freedoms and expressions of the self.
The turnout was fantastic, with people from the conference and Berlin residents joining us for the evening. There was even an small and spontaneous takeover of AI music by artist Ganbrood, who is well known for his photorealistic AI works that blend Art Nouveau, classical Japanese art, and 20th-century comic art.
YuYu presented IN DEN WOLKEN, a series of experimental post-photography. This six-piece collection pays homage to a city renowned for its freedom of expression and unapologetic existence. YuYu reflects on his growth journey, depicting his transition from innocence and exploration of the unknown nature that often accompanies it. In his words:
“This collection is an allegory for change; taking a bite of the forbidden fruit to achieve the sweetness of belonging”.
River Davis presented Megalophoria, drawing inspiration from "Gesunder Größenwahn", a concept by artist Iva Gette. It suggests that the act of creation is an expression of healthy megalomania. To bring an idea from inception to reality, one must be obsessive and driven.
This concept has significantly shaped Davis's understanding of what an artist achieves through each act of creation. In a world where attention has become the most valuable asset, each act of creation represents a hammer meant to destroy barriers imposed by society. In a world that encourages institutional repression of individuals, for Davis, Berlin stands as a beacon of freedom, reminding us of the power of creativity.
This event was made possible with the support of Jean-Michel Pailhon.
